Enabling Agro-ecological Transitions in Rainfed Landscapes
JIVA program is to enable communities in rainfed landscapes to achieve ecosystems and human well-being.
Natural Farming embraces divesification of crop systems with extended crop cover for longer period, integration of livestock and trees, rejuvenation of biological processes, natural methods of pest and nutrient management and efficient management of rainfall and soil moisture by extending soil cover for 365 days.
Natural farming being a knowledge and skill intensive, JIVA envisages an intensive engagement of the community to enable behavioural change through knowledge exchange, continuous dialogue, location specific innovations and capacity building.
JIVA Program is implemented in three phases viz., Learning Phase and Upscaling and Consolidation phases.
The scaling up of the learnings from the first year and expanding the knowledge and practice of Natural Farming to all the households in the JIVA project area will be planned thorugh the Participatory Natural Farming Transformation Planning process. This document details the planning process, methodology and formats for consolidation and submission of the NF Transformation Plans.
This participation NFT planning manual will be accompanied by a detailed ‘how to do play book’ that illustrates methodology of various exercises and provides strategic orientation on various elements of planning.
JIVA encompasses changing social relations, empowering farmers, adding value locally and privileging short value chains. JIVA triggers significant impacts in the project area, a few of them are:
Sustainability in natural resource use, food, nutrition and agriculture systems
Enhancement and stabilization of farm income, particularly for women and smallholder farmers
Climate resilience and contribution to mitigation of climate change
Enhancement of ecosystem services and natural regenreative processes
Stimulation to local economy aiding in its growth and employment
Improved human wellbeing with healthy food and improved nutrition, especially for the women and vulnerable groups
NF Transformation Plans (NFT) are landscape-based, based on initial Natural Farming practices, aiming to achieve objectives in JIVA guidelines for upscaling and consolidation phase budgets.
The project aims to promote natural farming practices, models, and experiential knowledge to 75% of farmers in a 250-ha area.
Establishment of different support systems at the landscape for enabling farmers to practice natural farming with ease.
Revive the ecosystem services – Water Resources, Biomass, Soil Health and Biodiversity
The bio-economy can be stimulated by utilizing non-chemical produce to establish a PGS system, strengthen local enterprises, and access value-added markets, thereby enhancing Gross Value Added.
Evolving related participatory / community and governance institutions for resource management and enterprise ecosystem for institutionalising the support systems.
Enabling natural farming transformation through practicing farmers and capacity building of community
Crop diversification and intensification
Regeneration of soils and imporving moisture / water
Strengthening and integrating livestock systems and fish production
Establishing Support Systems through Community institutions, bio-inputs, seeds, nursery, fodder shops, custom hiring of equipment etc., through community institutions
Nutrition sensitive agriculture and homesteads
Value addition, PGS certification and marketing / strengthening and stimulating local circular economies
